“Plyometrics in the Cardiotramp”How good is jumping in your work out? Part 1.

Hello my dear readers hope you had an amazing “New Year 2015 Celebration” and be ready to start for “some” or “continue” for others the task to keep our body in shape doing and improving training methods in our work outs and changing bad habits to reach your fitness goals.Always my philosophy writing this columns is teaching you something safe and well executed with technique and proper posture..saying this have you ever thought  when you had been asked for a trainer to jump in on top a box several times ? or see people jumping up and down in these platforms what are you doing or what is the benefit to your body?. Well first you have to know that some of these Jumps are called Plyometrics. Plyometrics (the shock method) was created by Yuri Verkhoshansky in the late 1960s, early 1970s.Since then “the shock method of plyometrics”  is still being practiced for improvement of athletic performance. In essence, the "athlete" goes into a slight squat upon landing in which the hip, knee, and ankle joints flex. The take off or jump upward is executed in a sequence initiated by hip-joint extension followed by knee-joint extension which begins during the hip-joint extension. When the athlete drops down to the floor, the body experiences an impact upon landing. The higher the height of the step-off platform, the greater the impact force upon landing. This creates a shock to the body which the body responds to by undergoing a strong involuntary muscular contraction to prevent the body from collapsing on the ground. Plyometrics have been shown to have benefits for reducing lower extremity injuries in team sports while combined with other neuromuscular training like Strength Training, Balance Training, and Stretching.

Plyometric exercises involve an increased risk of injury due to the large force generated during training and performance, and "should only be performed by well conditioned individuals under supervision". Good levels of Physical Strength, Flexibility and Balance should be achieved before you attend to start jumping Up and Down or a Crazy trainer ask you to do this if you haven’t work out in the past, you are obese, out of shape or have a knee or back problem “BE CAREFUL” ...a simple jump can hurt you.

Here are some safe Plyometrics in the Pilates Reformer that I want to show you since you are lying down in the Reformer and  the platform that you land is soft and flexible so the impact in your Lower body is less making possible to make it a Cardio Work out  and with  more  Amazing benefits in Agility, Core Stabilization and Strength to your Body that Plyometrics on the floor. This 4 movements can be done standing as ordinary Plyometrics.

1.- Basic Jump in the Cardio Tramp(Abs,quads, calves).
Lie down in the reformer, position your feet right in the center of the platform, legs semi extended and ready to propulse or jump away of the platform please inhale, as you jump away your legs are together and now fully straight and pointing your toes and squeezing your abs in the landing you will feel the work in your all Legs and quadriceps as well as  your core(exhale) you can do 4 sets of 20 jumps to prepare for the next exercise. See image #1.

2.- Jump Squats Adductors- Gluts in the Cardio Tramp (Gluts ,Adductors and Calves).
Lie down in the Reformer and and position your feet pointing away and heels close to each other, open your knees and legs away(see  the image) to make your adductors and Gluts get the  tension when you land please inhale, now as you exhale propulse  or jump away of the platform your legs are together and now fully straight and pointing your toes and squeezing your abs same as the basic jump, now you will be landing again as we start feet pointing away in a “V” knees and legs open, the harder and higher you propulse away the landing will be more intense and then you will feel the burn in the adductors, Gluts,Calves and all your Core .See image #2.

3.- Jogging in the Cardio Tramp(Legs, gluts, calves and all core muscles).
Lie down in the Reformer same start as the Basic Jump, feet in the middle of the platform and same as if you where jogging put your left foot in middle of the platform and now bring your right leg flexed and knee close to your body(see the image) please inhale, now shift legs and exhale as if you where jogging and propulse or jump away as high as you can or keep it a smooth jogging if you are a beginner, this exercise done in the Reformer is great for obese people who can’t jog at all because gravity and the impact is greater if you do this standing. Start maybe with cycles of 30 jumps or jogs with 30 seconds of resting 4 times then prepare for the next exercise.See image #3.

4.- Adductors and Gluts in the Cardio Tramp( Abductors, gluts, calves and Core)
Same starting as the Basic jump, feet in the middle, legs semi extended and ready to propulse or jump away of the platform please inhale and ready to propulse  but this time as you jump you will be opening your legs fully straight in a “V” and pointing toes making your abductors and gluts along with the core muscles work like you never felt before again land with feet and legs together and repeat. 20 jumps 4 times. More about Pyometrics in the next month.see image #4
