MAY ARTICLE 2013

The Pilates “Reformer”2013 the machine to strength your Core, increased Flexibility and correct posture  alignment in your all body Part 3

Hello my dear readers hope you have a chance to read in the past articles the 2 of the most important components in your Training Program your "Power House" and muscles involved and "Flexibility" and motivate you to try Pilates and all the benefits health wise that will bring you to improve your every day life.As I mentioned before "Joseph Pilates" believed that "mental health" and "physical health” where related.

This believe is very truth, but so NOT practiced in the gyms completely because either you go by yourself to the gym and don't have idea where to start or if you decide to buy some Personal Training  Sessions and the gym gives you a 20 year old kid as your Trainer still not quit prepare in this Pilates Principals  or experienced in "Exercise" at all and you don't ask or request WHO will be Training you, so your first experience at the gym can be a disaster, pay attention and think that getting a Trainer is like finding your Primary Physician a person that you can trust and well experienced and educated in his Profession.

Also as we evolved in "Exercise" we had "evolved" in "BAD HABITS" people, clients and trainers who can't MENTALLY focus in "working out" or "training 100% a client",like the person reading a newspaper or magazine while working out throwing the newspaper all around him or the one just talking  and talking as if the gym was a Bar .

Now that "Mind and Body" situation that Joseph Pilates mentioned is just "Destroyed"  with I-Phones, I-Pads or this Gigantic Earphones to listen to music, you texting when you are working out or reverse which I  I see "all the time" Trainers  texting and talking not paying attention what so ever in YOU and your form and execution in your sets.

In my opinion "texting, calling and not be able to concentrate" when you are going to WORKOUT or EXERCISE at the most 1 hour of your 24 hour day is totally "inappropriate and ridiculous" not focussing 60 minutes for your health, seems impossible or painful.

I had seen so many people with this "distracting machines" fall in treadmills cause the I-phone felt while they are running looking for pictures or texting, people being rude and not sharing the equipment when you nicely ask if you can take turns sharing the machine IGNORING YOU  because this person is pretending "not listening to you" wearing this gigantic earphones and tripping with the  45 lbs plate on the floor he's not seeing and not able to listen a warning from us, more Trainers using  I-Pads getting DISTRACTED and sometimes NOTV EVEN LOOKING at his client and the client getting hurt cause he couldn't do the last chest Press.

So my point here is "FOUCUS"...have a little "commitment" and prepare your mind to mentally accept that you CAN’T EXERCISE correct if you are texting, chatting or having a trainer not 100% focus in you. “Texting and Driving” can cause and accident as well as  “working out and being distract” or your trainer LOOKING AT HIS  I-Pad when you are about to passed out.

So to recall so far all the information I had shared with you since the beginning of the year and help you if you can't have a Trainer is giving you the tools to Create and Plan your Scheduling Work Out Routines .In January 2013 "The Cardiovascular machines" so you can do your CARDIO and the time you need to spent to burn fat with out having a hart attack,February I give you "Scheduling your Training days" so you can organize your “Muscle Parts” to workout during the week and this last 3 Chapters of "The Pilates Reformer" as part of the main root of how to prepare your body to have a Strong Core or "Power House" and the importance of the “Flexibility” to avoid soreness.

Now to resume this the 3 chapters of "The Pilates Reformer" my dear readers is not just doing the "Pilates Class" or using the"Reformer", is Learning and Listening to your Body an AWAKE  to a discipline to help you Mentally and physically give Focus and AWARENESS  to apply into your workouts, in your life and in your general well being.

So when yo go to do your Work Out Routine,Pilates or other Style of exercise THINK in the Pilates principals that I will mention again with an image of more extraordinary Reformer exercises so you have a guide to do a Great Workout!!.

1.- Concentration.
Stop talking or texting and concentrate in the exercise or machine you will use in your exercise routine. Splits/Abs/Hamstrings Reformer.Image #1.

2.- Control.

3.- Centering.

4.- Flow or efficiency of movement.
Thanks to your core strength your movements will have a better transition and flow.Gluts/Quads/Hamstrings/Abs in the Reformer. Image #4.

5.-Precision.
Do your movements precise and clean technique.Stand tall and shoulders back chest out.

Splits / Abd / Isquiotibiales Reformer.Imagen # 1.

APRIL ARTICLE 2013

"The Pilates Reformer2013" the machine to strength your Core, increased Flexibility, correct posture and alignment in your all body Part 2.

Hello my dear readers as I mentioned in the first part of this article it has been 28 years that I had seen new trends, styles and sometimes very awkward and unsafe TYPES of EXERCISE that had come along that I had to tried because my Profession is learning what really works in your body and if I had to judge these trends I had to give them a try.

PX-90, Boot Camp,Cycling, Martial Arts,Turbo Kick Boxing,Zumba, Pilates with many Apparatus and the latest hot thing "Cross fit" that it's hot but in my opinion the most UNSAFE activity along with the "PX-90" all because normal unfit people or even Fit instructors or Fit people who DOESN'T  know about "Core stabilization,Breathing Aliment,Posture, Stretching and Flow in the movement of the Body" do these and later on they get INJURED doing  this crazy ROUTINES that “yes will make you sweat” and feel pain but the "SIDE EFFECTS" are really bad in the long run.My personal opinion and Experience after doing most of these styles I mentioned before "PILATES" is what you should Learn as an Instructor,Personal trainer or Exercise Practitioner to prepare your body to any regular “Style of Exercise" you choose. I still see so many Trainers and people doing PX90 and Cross Fit with Bad Posture, No Core Strength and they think they are doing a benefit to their bodies...NOT!!!.Anyways since I had been injured 16 years ago from my back my BODY is more AWARE and SENSITIVE of bad exercises, speed or high impact. For now I will just talk about the “Reformer” and how amazing works in all the things that your body needs to have a strong "Power House" your core, alignment, posture and control of your mind and body.I will have lots to talk in other issue about How bad are some "Styles of Exercises for your body " now days.

So the "Reformer" offers all the famous benefits of Pilates including overall strength, flexibility, coordination, and balance. These things in turn lead to daily life improvements like better posture, graceful, efficient movement, and for many, relief from PAIN associated with physical imbalances such as Back Pain. When we talk about strength building and Pilates the Pilates powerhouse muscles, the muscles of the core, are paramount. Flat abs, strong backs, toned buttock and thighs are all results of this emphasis. The Reformer is large enough to accommodate full-range motion which is wonderful for increasing flexibility while building Strength. It seems to invite the length we want to create in the body. And it trains the body to sustain that length. Pushing and pulling with legs or arms against the resistance of the springs, carriage, and body weight is generally strength building. The exercises provide enough resistance and movement variety to help build strong bones. And there is a special feature: eccentric muscle contractions. This is when a muscle lengthens as it resists a force. The reformer is a set-up for eccentric contraction. That is one of the keys to achieving the long, strong muscles without bulk that Pilates is known for.You will develop a Ballet Dancer Physique with long and tone muscles and huge gluts and strong legs.

When you practice Pilates you CAN’T  be TALKING,using you I-PHONE or NOT PUTTING ATTENTION at what your Instructor or your BODY is telling you.
If you have a Trainer who doesn’t guide you during your exercises and is just counting or looking at his phone dont' waist your TIME or MONEY the Trainer is "Unprofesional" and you are one more of the Million people that NEVER listen or LEARN of an Exercise or Sport and of course you will get hurt.

Pilates Principals.
1.- Concentration.
You have to concentrate on what you're doing all the time. And you must concentrate on your entire body for smooth movements.

2.- Control.
The reason you need to concentrate so thoroughly is so you can be in control of every aspect of every moment.

3.- Centering.
In order for the person to attain control of their body they must have a starting place: the center. The center is the focal point of the Pilates Method. Many Pilates teachers refer to the group of muscles in the center of the body encompassing the abdomen, lower and upper back, hips, buttocks, and inner thighs—as the "powerhouse". All movement in Pilates should begin from the powerhouse and flow outward to the limbs.

4.- Flow or efficiency of movement.
Pilates aims for elegant sufficiency of movement, creating flow through the use of appropriate transitions.Pilates is flowing movement outward from a strong core.

5.-Precision.
The focus is on doing one precise and perfect movement, rather than many halfhearted ones.

6.- Breathing
Proper full inhalation and complete exhalation. In Pilates exercises, the practitioner breathes out with the effort and in on the return. In order to keep the lower abdominals close to the spine; the breathing needs to be directed laterally, into the lower rib cage. Pilates breathing is described as a posterior lateral breathing, meaning that the practitioner is instructed to breathe deep into the back and sides of his or her rib cage.

Here are 5 Basic Pilates Reformer exercises in a different angle and what muscles are working  and more datail next issue.

1.- Standing Abduction/ adduction (Legs, gluts and Core).

2.- Standing Lunges(quadriceps, hip flexor, gluts and Core).

3.-Standing Split(Hamstrings, gluts,calves and Core).

4.- Hips Flexion/Extension(hamstrings,lower and middle back,calves,hip flexors,core).

5..- Sitting Chest Press(chest, shoulders and Core).

I will do a YOU TUBE CLIP for this month column to help you see and understand this movements so please go to my FACEBOOK : https://www.facebook.com/pages/TU-Entrenador-Octavio/165080336837285?fref=ts

The machine to strength your Core, increased Flexibility and correct posture  alignment in your all body

Hello my dear readers now it's time to talk about some others Components in your Training Program. What now days they called "Power House" or abdominals and your "Flexibility" and  how important is for you to work ,understand and practice every day this 2 techniques to help you avoid future injuries and helping you Increased a correct Posture for your every day  Crazy life with hours sitting in a desk, driving or not moving enough, this will give you a long and healthy well being to your body as you get Older and avoid Physical pain .In my experience all along this 28 years of doing exercise I had learn that no matter what Sport or Physical activity you choose in my case Swimming, Gymnastic,Martial Arts,Body Building or Dance and being Injured sometimes doing these Sports,if I didn't have a Strong Abs "Power House" and my amazing "Flexibility" since I started exercising my life at the Gym will never existed  or the shape of my body wouldn't look as it looks at 46 years old.Somehow I had the LUCK to learn this 2  things"Core Stabilization and flexibility" when I was very very  young and "EXERCISE" was not a BASIC or MANDATORY activity to practice. I remember that "Smoke and Drink" was Cool in my Parents era,the Food was not measure by Healthy Standards, fat or servingsand Specific kind of exercise was only for the Olympian athletes or European Ballet Dancers and fanatic Bodybuilders that they where consider freaks if you look Huge and Muscular.

In 28 years I had seeing how EXERCISE has Evolved  and become a PRIORITY in the human life to live longer, healthier and avoid Illness, sickness or pain. I remember  my coaches when I was swimming, doing gymnastics, tae kwan do,dance or Bodybuildingscreaming at me : Get your ABS strong cause he is going to hit you or you need to work in your FLEXIBILITY to hit him in the face cause he is taller that you, or if you don't EXTEND legs and arms LONG  enough you will never be fast and win in the pool,or Stand tall and suck your ABS if you want to look Graceful, Elegant and Good either Dancing or doing a Gymnastic floor routine, or in Body Building obsessed to GET A SIX PACK to impressed or to be consider that you actually went to the GYM. PILATES was designed by Joseph Pilates, who was a physical-culturist born in Mönchengladbach, Germany, in 1883. He developed a system of exercises during the first half of the 20th century which were intended to strengthen the human mind and body. Joseph Pilates believed that mental and physical health are interrelated. The Pilates method seeks to develop controlled movement from astrong core.
The most widely used piece of apparatus at the GYMS , and probably the most important, is the REFORMER and which i will talk to you how to use it.

Pilates Principals.

1.- Concentration.
2.- Control.
3.- Centering.
4.- Flow or efficiency of movement.
5.- Precision.
6.- Breathing

I will explain each one of this principals along with some exercise with the REFORMER to understand that you need aTRAINER expert in PILATES and with EXPERIENCE in other Sports to REALLY teach you when you are using the REFORMER so you don’t get Injured. And if you have the chance to PRACTICE this PILATES classes you will discover the EXTRAORDINARY  IMPACT effect in yourBODY,MIND and SOUL.

Here are  5 Basic Pilates Reformer exercises:

FEBRUARY ARTICLE 2013

"Scheduling your Training Days using Dumbbells".

Hello my dear readers hope you had the chance  to read and understand the use of the Cardio Machines in my last Issue so now you know 1 (Cardio) of the First  5 Components in an Exercise Program in your  list and Organize  your Routine. The next one is the "SCHEDULING" of your Muscle Groups to avoid extra STRESS in your joints, if you just do WHATEVER muscle and have NO ORDER  you probably hurt your body and joints or you may always do the same routine and not REALLY getting any benefit  in your Resistance Program. My expertise, information and facts from many Seminars I had taken of Muscular Training said that you have to work "Agonist and Antagonist Muscles". SO LISTEN carefully, we call the muscle that is working "agonist" and the opposite muscle will be the “Antagonist"  an example is  if you are doing CHEST PRESS or UPPER CHEST this will be you Agonist muscle "or doing the work" and the Antagonist  “or opposite muscle” of this particular Press will be your TRICEP MUSCLES.

If you are doing a BACK exercise with the help of a bench to support your Body and maintain a CLEAN  and PERFECT  POSTURE you have to  dropped the dumbbell at the way down almost touching the floor the arm and bicep fully extend or stretched and as you PULL UP the dumbbell squeezing your  BACK  this will be the Agonist muscle so the Bicep will be the Antagonist. So again to make sure you GOT this record in your mind the MUSCLE you are WORKING in this example UPPER BACK always  will be the AGONIST and the posterior muscle will be the ANTAGONIST in this BICEPS.

Working in this ORDER also Develops better Muscle Mass, Tone, Definition and growth in your MUSCLES. So here is my suggestion to SCHEDULE your Muscles Groups that will make sense and also will have the time to REST the muscles you will workout .So we have 7 days of the week here is my logic in my personal scheduling and as well as many other experts in their Routines: 2 Muscle Groups per day and 1 to 2 DAYS of REST.

 -MONDAY
Legs and Shoulders.
Legs( the more you have bigger and stronger Muscles in your Legs) your regular testosterone levels will increased because our Testicles  get stimulated doing LEGS to help you loose FAT and BUIL UP more MUSCLE)and Shoulders.
Don't be lazy and do from Squats, lunges , leg press leg cur, leg extension etc,etc
I will say 5 to 6 different Leg exercises for Shoulder you can at least do 3 exercises like lateral shoulder, shoulder press, frontal shoulder with Olympic bar or dumbbells and reverse shoulder in the Fly machine sitting in front of the machine and opening the arms and towards the back( I had mentioned the technique of these exercises in past issues).See image #1 and  #2.

- TUESDAY
Chest and Triceps.
Either you decide to work Middle,Upper and lower chest with  Heavy dumbbells make sure that when you position your body sitting on the bench  first with both Dumbbells resting in your knees, then to get them next to your chest LIFT first your right leg to push the dumbbell UP and using your arm strong HOLD  that dumbbell steady and now do the same thing with the left leg,LIFT the leg up and use LEFT arm to position both Dumbbells at the level of you Chest and nipples (THIS IS THE SAFEST WAY TO START YOUR POSITION) specially if you working out alone (inhale)and you don't want to hurt yourself just trying to carry the dumbbell.Keep your back all the time leaning on the beach when doing "upper chest" or any other exercise when your back is doing the PRESS extending the arms UP (exhale).I always see this MACHO GUYS using Heavy Dumbbells and arching their BACKS(cheating of course) which is very bad and ready to pinch a NERVE, Technique guys, technique and Clean exercises.See image #2

-WEDNESDAY
Back and biceps.
Here will use a bench to support our back exercise, please see my posture, one leg and knee flex on the bench and well as your right arm semi locked  to help you maintain a perfect horizontal line in your Back, holding your stomach (ABS) and holding in left arm the dumbbell arm fully extended (inhale) as you keep your back not moving  and just bringing your left arm UP squeezing Back Muscles till the level of your nipple(exhale), so you can do 3 or 4 back exercises plus 3 or 4 Biceps Curl Exercises like "Standing Curl" using Dumbbells, just remember to stand feet wide apart, back straight , arms next to your body and fully extended in starting position (inhale) the bring both dumbbells close  to your biceps and squeezing them(exhale).See image #3.

So you will REPEAT in day number 4 THURSDAY your legs and shoulders, day number 5 Chest and Triceps, day number 6 Back and Biceps and day number 7 you take  a well rewarded DAY OF REST for your hard work during the week.So  in a few words you will have 48 hours of rest between 2 muscle groups you had work and plus a full day of BREAK Sunday to let  your muscles growth and develop big and strong. If you do OVER and OVER with no rest the same muscle you will WEAR OUT your JOINTS in knees, shoulders or elbows so TRAIN SMART and make this A GREAT CHANGE and order in your Work Out Routines.

So now you know how to SCHEDULE your WORKOUT ROUTINE and for reviewing all the different exercises with machines and other apparatus get your PAST Adelante Issues or go to my Facebook: TU ENTRENADOR OCTAVIO to see on line my fitness articles and help you MIX many exercises and technique to perform correctly your Routines.
